Economics - Fall 2016
This course is taught by Bryan Owens, a senior at Gunn High School. If you want to learn about how stock markets work, how inflation and deflation affect economies, or how individuals, corporations, and governments make fiscal and monetary decisions, come join us for this exciting 6-week class in economics!
There are two classes. They are both currently full.
Dates: 8/20, 9/10, 9/24, 10/8, 11/5, 11/19
Time: 6:30pm–7:30pm for 8th and 9th grade students; 7:45pm-8:45pm for 10th and 11th grade students

Instructor: Bryan Owens
Bryan is a senior at Gunn High School. He has been teaching classes since January 2015, sharing his knowledge with 80 students so far. Each semester, he designs and teaches a new course. He has taught Speech and Debate (Jan 2015 – Dec 2015), Current Events (Aug 2015 – Dec 2015), and US Political History (Feb 2016 – May 2016). In 2016 Bryan attended the most prestigious business summer program for high school students, Leadership In The Business World at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. He is eager to bring his economics and business expertise to SVY students in a fun small classroom environment.
Syllabus
In this 6-lesson course you will learn economics (commonly abbreviated as “econ”) with an emphasis on intuitive reasoning, and on connecting theory to practice in today’s economy. Use of complicated graphs and math will be minimized in favor of logic.
Here is the course schedule:
Lesson 1 (Aug 20) — Brief history of econ, basic econ theory part 1
Lesson 2 (Sept 10) — Basic econ theory part 2, types of companies, simple investing (stock market!)
Lesson 3 (Sept 24) — Variations from price equilibrium, simple government decisions, types of industries
Lesson 4 (Oct 8) — Market cycle, fiscal & monetary policy, combating recessionary and inflationary gaps, market failures
Lesson 5 (Nov 5) — International trade, forex, advanced investing (bonds, options, futures, funds)
Lesson 6 (Nov 19) — Stock portfolio reflections, modern economic debates, quick ad for Intro to Business
