Current Events and Public Speaking

Current events are news that are currently happening around the world. Every other week, students will choose recent news topics to focus on. They will be researching these topics and giving a five minute presentation for a topic during class. The instructor and TA will help with discussions and give the presenter feedback, as well as helping students effectively analyze text and be able to speak well. By the end of the course, students will be able to speak and lead confidently in front of an audience, develop critical thinking skills, and be more informed on current events.

Brandon Fu

Brandon Fu is a sophomore at Homestead High School. Brandon debates in the parliamentary debate section of his school’s debate team. He has taken countless public speaking courses and can transfer his speech skills to students. He has two years of experience teaching younger students. Last semester, he taught a successful class of Website Design, educating students on a variety of concepts including HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap. Brandon also teaches Java and Scratch to special needs students, earning him the title of Volunteer of the Year at Friends of Children with Special Needs (FCSN). Brandon’s deep subject knowledge and familiarity with teaching allows him to teach and work well with students.

Andy Li

Andy is a 9th grader at Lynbrook High School. He has been taking various Speech and Debate classes for over two years. He has competed in many debate tournaments and experienced many different types of situation. He has ample knowledge in Parliamentary and Public Forum debate. He understands how to speak politely and persuasively. He is always doing lots of research on recent topics and reads current events that could be useful for contentions and speeches in debate.
